CARRUMBA (f, 3, Bernardini–Castanet, by El Prado {Ire}) kept the ball rolling and notched her third straight win as the 1-5 favorite on Columbus Day at Belmont. After finishing second in her first two starts, the gray broke through with a decisive score in her first try around two turns in a nine-panel test at Saratoga Aug. 21. She recently romped by nine lengths in a muddy trip-and-track effort Sept. 13, earning a career topping 99 Beyer Speed Figure that stamped her clearly as the one to beat today and fired a best-of-60 half-mile bullet in :47 flat over this strip Oct. 6. Away in good order, the homebred set a measured pace through fractions of :24.69 and :48.62 and came under pressure from longshot Tahoe Tigress (Stephen Got Even) midway on the turn. Carrumba matched strides with that foe into the stretch and gradually edged clear to earn a 2 1/2-length victory. The final time for the mile was 1:35.51.
